Sunset Valley, Texas
Sunset Valley, Texas was founded in 1954. The residents of Sunset Valley wanted to maintain a quiet, friendly way of life in the middle of the fast growing Austin Texas. The City of Sunset Valley lies southwest of downtown Austin. Sunset Valley is independent of Austin but maintains a close relationship with the capital city.
The city’s first water system was a well purchased from a Sunset Valley resident and served until a new system was installed in 1977. Natural gas lines were installed in 1965 and Cable TV was installed in 1975. In the mid- 70's. Sunset Valley Elementary School (where my youngest son will attend next year) and Burger Stadium were built. Both are part of the Austin Independent School District. Additionally, during the late 60's and 70's, the paving of streets took place throughout the city. Sunset Valley's waste water system was constructed in 1990 with a grant from the Texas Water Development Board.
My favorite Sunset Valley event is the Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market. The Farmer’s Market is held at Burger Stadium and is open every Saturday from 9am until 1pm. Sunset Valley Farmer’s Market was voted by Eating Well Magazine as one of the top 5 farmers markets in the country. They won the Austin Chronicle's Best of 2007 Reader's Poll 'Best Farmers Market' and their 2006 award for 'Best Food Court.' Wolfgang Puck has endorsed the Sunset Valley Farmers Market, and we were ranked as one of the top 10 Farmers Markets in the country (along with Madison, Santa Fe, Ithaca, and Ferry's Plaza) by the Audubon Society.
Today, Sunset Valley remains a relatively small town, but there certainly have been a lot of changes and growth. The Sunset Valley Village shopping center was built in 1998, which includes Barnes & Noble, Comp USA, Cost Plus World Market, Linens and Things, Old Navy, and much more. Sunset Valley has walking trails from residential areas to the shopping center. Recently, a new home subdivision was built in the area.
